I can't tell you where I heard the tale. I promised not to mention names, but I guess I can say it came from the owner of one of the many bed and breakfast inns in the Berkeley Springs area. She had misgivings, since she didn't want to scare away tourists, but the story slipped out after a few glasses of wine.

Seems that in the late 1990s, two women came to stay at her place on a slow midweek night in late October, between the town's annual Apple Butter Festival and Halloween.

The two—a blonde in her early twenties and her fortyish aunt—had obviously researched Berkeley Springs ahead of time. From their chatter, the innkeeper could tell they were intrigued by the old town. They knew the usual legends of how young George Washington discovered the warm springs and how warring Indian tribes once laid down their tomahawks and soaked together peacefully in the healing waters. Such stories fit comfortably into the New Age vision that the two visitors were interested in exploring. They'd also learned from the internet that the spa town now had more massage therapists than lawyers, so they planned to get massages the next morning.
